Customer Spotlight
Joe Napolitano
Director of Disabled Students Programs and Services for Cabrillo College
AOI Customer since 1996
Vehicle transportation and mobility access have been a major concern for our spotlight customer, Joseph Napolitano. As a paraplegic, Joe has experienced first-hand the challenging aspects of becoming an independent driver. For many years, Joe drove vans that had no chair lifting capabilities. He would manually pull himself into the driver seat of the van, and using his arm strength only, then fold and pull his wheelchair into the van as well. Even after years of physical abuse on his body, Joe still questioned whether or not it was really necessary to purchase a van that came equipped with a platform lift. Twelve years ago, Joe realized that it was necessary to take the plunge and purchased a van that would make his mobility access easier. "Having this equipment has taken the frustration and physical abuse out of transportation," Joe remarked.
Recently, Joe came to AOI looking to upgrade to a newer van with accessible products that will only further increase his mobility needs. He has purchased a 2000 Ford E-150 equipped with a Braun Vangater lift and MPS hand controls. With the addition of a transfer seat and a transfer sofa that our certified technicians will install, Joe will have additional comforts as an independent driver. "The confidence I have gained over the years with vehicle mobility devices has made this new purchase possible."
Joe has lived in the Santa Cruz area for over 25 years. He has worked at Cabrillo College for the last 16 years assisting students with disabilities. He spent the first fifteen years as a counselor providing advice to students on both academic and personal concerns. Within the last year, Joe was promoted to Director of Disabled Students Programs and Services where he oversees the many programs available to students with disabilities.
We'd like to thank Joe for his continued support of Access Options and we are glad that we have been able to provide Joe with a variety of products that have made mobility and independence possible. Thank you, Joe!
